The e-passport Pakistan now issues is the usual passport booklet with a small electronic chip inside one page. From 15 October 2026, new applicants receive this version only, so it is the passport most people will hold at their next renewal. This guide covers the latest fee rates for 2027, the documents you need, the steps to apply online and how to follow your application after you submit it.
What Is an E-Passport in Pakistan?
An e-passport stores your personal and biometric details on a chip built into the passport. At the airport, an officer scans the chip and checks it against the printed page. This makes altered or forged documents far easier to catch and gives genuine travellers a faster check at the immigration desk. The design follows standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), so border systems abroad can read it the way they read other ICAO-standard passports.
What the Chip Holds
The chip carries the details printed on your data page, your biometric information, a unique identification number and a digital signature. That signature lets a scanner confirm the data was not changed after issue, so your identity details stay protected from tampering. The printed pages add security features such as laser engraving and infrared and ultraviolet elements.
E-Passport vs MRP: What Changes for You
If you have applied for a passport before, the process will feel familiar. You still use your CNIC, pay a fee and give your fingerprints and photo. The main changes are the chip and the fee. The table below shows the points that matter most.
| Point | MRP | E-passport |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic chip | No | Yes, in one page |
| Biometric data | Not stored on a chip | Stored on the chip |
| Digital signature | No | Yes |
| New applications from 15 Oct 2026 | Not issued | Only option |
| Existing passport | Valid until printed expiry | Issued at your next renewal |
E-Passport Pakistan Fee for 2027
Fees depend on the number of pages, the validity period and whether you choose normal or urgent service. The table below lists the current e-passport rates, and our Pakistan passport fee guide keeps the wider fee list in one place. No 2027 revision had been announced at the time of writing, so check the official portal if you apply after the new year.
| Pages | Validity | Normal fee (PKR) | Urgent fee (PKR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 | 5 years | 9,000 | 15,000 |
| 36 | 10 years | 13,500 | 22,500 |
| 72 | 5 years | 16,500 | 27,000 |
| 72 | 10 years | 24,750 | 40,500 |
Cash is no longer accepted at passport offices, and fees are paid through an online, cashless system. This means you can pay from your phone without queuing at a counter.
Which Option Fits You?
For people who travel once or twice a year, the 36-page passport is usually enough. If you collect many visa stamps, the 72-page version gives more room for entry and exit stamps. Longer validity also helps on cost. A 10-year, 36-page passport works out to Rs 1,350 a year at the normal rate, against Rs 1,800 a year for the 5-year version, so the 10-year option lowers your yearly cost. Urgent service costs roughly two-thirds more than normal service, so choose it only when your travel date is close.
Applicants abroad pay in local currency through their mission. In the UAE, a 5-year, 36-page e-passport costs AED 145 under normal processing, and the mission’s public notice lists every rate in one place.
Why 15 October 2026 Matters for MRP Holders
The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports told passport offices to stop taking new MRP applications from 15 October 2026. Pakistani missions abroad follow the same rule. Anyone who applies on or after that date receives an e-passport.
Your current MRP stays valid until the expiry date printed on it, so there is no rush to replace a passport that still has years left. When it does expire, the renewal will be an e-passport.
E-Passport Pakistan Online Application: Step by Step
The steps follow the same order as earlier passports, and our passport application guide walks through the form in more detail. Doing the first half online means less time spent at the passport office.
Step 1: Fill in the Application Form
Open the DGI&P online passport portal and enter your details exactly as they appear on your CNIC. Mismatched details can slow the application down, so check every field before you submit.
Step 2: Pay the Fee Online
Choose the pages, validity and service speed, then pay through an online banking channel. Keep the payment confirmation, because it works as your proof of payment at the office.
Step 3: Visit the Passport Office
Go to your Regional Passport Office (RPO) with your original documents for biometrics and your photo. Officials have said a mobile app route for submitting documents is on the way, so check the portal for what is live when you apply. Keeping your documents in one folder saves time at the counter.
Step 4: Wait for Your Passport
Normal and urgent service have different delivery times, so confirm the current period with the passport office when you apply. Choosing urgent service shortens the wait if your travel date is close.
Documents Required for an E-Passport
Carry originals and photocopies. The list below covers most cases, and having everything ready avoids a second trip.
- Original CNIC (or NICOP for overseas Pakistanis) with a photocopy
- Proof of fee payment, such as the e-payment confirmation with your PSID
- Previous passport with a photocopy, if you have one
- Police report mentioning the old passport number, if the passport was lost
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your department, for government and semi-government employees
- Child Registration Certificate (Form B) or Family Registration Certificate, for children under 10
- Foreign passport copy, for dual nationals
Follow the photo size and background rules shown on the portal, since an accepted photo keeps your file moving.
Track Your E-Passport Pakistan Application
After you submit, you receive a token number. Use it on the DGI&P portal, or follow our passport tracking guide to check each stage. You can see your status from home, with no need to call or visit repeatedly. Renewal applicants also get status updates by email, so use an address you check often.
Checks to Make Before You Apply
Look at your current passport’s expiry date first. Many countries ask for six months of validity remaining at entry, so renewing early avoids last-minute pressure when a trip is close.
Officials say e-passport data can be verified instantly at e-gates, and Pakistan’s registration with the ICAO system is under way. Shorter airport queues are the goal, but not every airport has e-gates, so keep your printed documents and visa papers with you.

Enter your token number on the DGI&P portal. The status page shows where your application stands without a visit to the RPO.
How can I tell if a passport is an e-passport?
