Exciting News! UAE Extends Work Permit Duration to Three Years, Easing the Employment Journey

In a significant development, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a proactive step to enhance the work environment by extending the work permit duration from two years to an impressive three years. This remarkable decision has been made in response to the recommendations put forth by the esteemed Federal National Council (FNC) committee.

The FNC's Committee on Financial, Economic, and Industrial Affairs astutely suggested this extension, taking into consideration the expenses associated with the application and issuance processes. By prolonging the work permit duration, the UAE aims to provide greater stability and convenience to both employers and employees, nurturing a more harmonious work atmosphere.

Additionally, the committee has offered valuable advice regarding work permit fee exemptions when employees decide to change their jobs. Under the new guidelines, this exemption will be applicable to individuals who have completed at least one year of service at their current company, following the completion of their probation period. It is worth noting that the employer's approval remains a prerequisite for the waiver of this condition, ensuring a balanced approach that safeguards the interests of all parties involved.

UAE's Vigilant Stance on Employers

In a further display of its commitment to protecting employee rights, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) issued a stern warning to employers in February. The ministry emphasized that private companies are prohibited from compelling new employees to commence work without a valid residence visa.

Underscoring the importance of due process, the MoHRE stressed that workers should not be coerced into commencing their duties solely on the basis of work permits. To employ a foreign worker with a work permit, companies are required to first request a quota from the MoHRE, followed by providing an official offer letter to the prospective employee. This proactive measure ensures that the rights and well-being of workers are adequately protected.

These progressive initiatives reflect the UAE's dedication to fostering a fair and thriving work environment, promoting employee welfare, and bolstering the nation's position as a global leader. With these new regulations in place, both employers and employees can embark on a more secure and prosperous professional journey in the UAE.
