Masjid al-Haram, Makkah — where pilgrims perform Tawaf during Umrah.

QUICK ANSWER

Umrah has 4 core rituals: Ihram (entering consecration at the Miqat), Tawaf (7 circuits around the Kaaba), Sa'i (7 trips between Safa and Marwah), and Halq/Taqsir (cutting hair to exit Ihram).

The entire Umrah can be completed in a few hours, though most pilgrims spend several days in Makkah and Madinah. Performing Umrah in Ramadan holds special spiritual significance, with rewards equivalent to a small Hajj in blessings (though not obligation). See our Ramadan Umrah Packages for details.

What Is Umrah?

Umrah (also known as the "lesser pilgrimage") is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is not obligatory like Hajj, but is highly recommended and carries immense spiritual reward.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "A Umrah following another Umrah is an expiation of the sins committed between the two." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Unlike Hajj, Umrah has no fixed dates and consists of only four core rituals. Planning a trip? See our Umrah Packages 2026/2027 for pricing and options.

The 4 Pillars of Umrah

Umrah consists of four pillars. If any of these is omitted, the Umrah is incomplete:

PillarWhat It Means
1. IhramEntering the state of consecration at the Miqat with the intention of performing Umrah
2. TawafCircumambulating the Kaaba seven times, with the Kaaba on your left
3. Sa'iWalking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah
4. Halq / TaqsirShaving the head (men) or trimming a fingertip's length of hair (women)

The four pillars that make up the complete Umrah

Step 1: Entering Ihram (State of Consecration)

What is Ihram? Ihram is entering into the worship of Umrah, where previously permissible things become forbidden — such as wearing sewn clothes (for men), cutting hair, clipping nails, or applying perfume.

Before Reaching the Miqat (Boundary)

It is recommended to perform Ghusl (full bath) and cleanse yourself before entering Ihram. For women: This applies even during menstruation or post-natal bleeding — though you cannot perform Tawaf until you attain purity.

Clothing for Ihram

  • Men: Remove all form-fitting clothing. Wear two unstitched sheets — one around the waist (Izar) and one over the shoulders (Rida'). It is recommended they be white and clean.
  • Women: Wear regular modest clothing that is neither adorned nor prominent (not tight or transparent). Remove Niqab (face veil), Burqu', and gloves — cover your face and hands from non-Mahram men with other clothing items.

Niyyah (Intention)

Make the intention in your heart and verbally say: "Labbayka 'Umrah" (Here I am to perform 'Umrah) or "Allāhumma labbayka 'Umrah" (O Allah, here I am to perform 'Umrah).

If you fear you cannot complete the rituals (due to illness or fear of an enemy), it is permissible to make a condition: "If something hinders me, I shall end my Ihram wherever I am hindered."

Talbiyah (Recitation)

Recite frequently during Ihram:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

"Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharīka laka labbayk, inna al-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharīka lak."

(Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.)

Men should raise their voices with Talbiyah, while women should lower theirs.

Important: It is not permissible to pass the Miqat without entering Ihram if you intend to perform Umrah. If you are traveling by air, you should enter Ihram before or during the flight.

Step 2: Tawaf (Circumambulation Around the Kaaba)

Upon reaching Masjid al-Haram, enter with your right foot first and recite the dua for entering the mosque.

Stopping Talbiyah

When you reach the Kaaba, cease the Talbiyah and prepare for Tawaf.

Starting at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad)

Face the Black Stone. Touch it with your right hand and kiss it if possible without harming others by crowding. If kissing is difficult, touch it with your hand or a stick and kiss what you touched. If touching is difficult, point to it and say "Allahu Akbar".

Performing the Tawaf

  • Make the Kaaba to your left and perform Tawaf for seven rounds.
  • Ritual purity (minor and major Hadath) is required — as Tawaf is akin to prayer, except speaking is permitted.
  • Ramal: Recommended for men to walk in fast, short steps during the first three rounds.
  • Idtiba': For men, place the middle of the robe under the right shoulder and its ends over the left shoulder during Tawaf.
  • When reaching the Yemeni Corner, touch it with your right hand if possible and say "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar" — without kissing it.

After Completing Tawaf

  • Cover your shoulder (end Idtiba').
  • Pray two rak'ahs behind the Station of Ibrahim (or anywhere in the mosque if crowded). In the first rak'ah, recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Al-Fatihah; in the second, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas.
  • It is Sunnah to drink Zamzam water after Tawaf.

Step 3: Sa'i (Walking Between Safa and Marwah)

What is Sa'i? Sa'i is the third pillar of Umrah, commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail.

How to Count the Circuits

  • Going from Safa to Marwah = 1 circuit
  • Returning from Marwah to Safa = 1 circuit
  • Complete 7 circuits total, ending at Marwah

Step-by-Step Sa'i

  1. Start at Safa: Face the Qiblah and recite: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah..." Then make personal supplications. Repeat three times.
  2. Walk toward Marwah.
  3. Harwalah (brisk walking for men): When you enter the area marked by two green lights, men perform brisk walking until passing the green lights, then resume normal walking. Women do not perform Harwalah.
  4. Upon reaching Marwah, you have completed one circuit. The return trip counts as the next.

Did you know?

Average completion time for Sa'i is 45–60 minutes. The total distance of the seven circuits is approximately 2,761 meters.

Step 4: Halq or Taqsir (Cutting Hair) — Exiting Ihram

For Men

Shave the head completely (Halq) or trim the hair (Taqsir). Shaving is preferred.

For Women

Gather your hair and cut a fingertip's length or less from the ends.

Where to Cut

Cutting is not required in the Sa'i area. There are designated and licensed barbershops around the Grand Mosque.

After this step, your Umrah is complete and you exit Ihram. All previously forbidden things become permissible again.

Duas to Recite During Umrah

There is no specific supplication required for each round of Tawaf. You may supplicate and remember Allah with whatever is easy from the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Dua for Safe Travel (Before Journey)

"Subḥāna alladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn"

Dua Upon Entering Makkah

"Rabbi ighfir warḥam wa anta khayru-r-rāḥimīn"

Dua Before Tawaf

"Rabbana taqabbal minnā, innaka Antas-Samīʿul-ʿAlīm"

Dua During Tawaf (Between Black Stone and Yemeni Corner)

"Rabbana Atina Fid Dunya Hasanah, wa fil akhirati hasanah, wa qina 'adhaban-nar"

Dua at Safa and Marwah

"Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah..." (Al-Baqarah: 158)

Frequently Asked Questions About Performing Umrah

What are the 4 pillars of Umrah?

The four pillars are: Ihram (entering consecration), Tawaf (7 circuits around the Kaaba), Sa'i (7 trips between Safa and Marwah), and Halq/Taqsir (cutting hair to exit Ihram).

How long does Umrah take?

The rituals themselves can be completed in a few hours (approximately 3–4 hours including Tawaf and Sa'i). However, most pilgrims spend several days in Makkah and Madinah to perform multiple Umrahs and visit Ziyarat sites.

Can I perform Umrah on a stopover visa?

Yes. Saudi Arabia offers a stopover visa for up to 96 hours (4 days) for passengers transiting through Saudi Arabia on Saudia or Flynas. You must register through the Nusuk platform and have confirmed hotel reservations.

Can I perform more than one Umrah?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said: "A Umrah following another Umrah is an expiation of the sins committed between the two." You can perform multiple Umrahs during your stay, though each requires exiting Makkah to the nearest Miqat (such as Masjid Aisha) and re-entering Ihram.

What should I do if I make a mistake during Umrah?

Minor mistakes are forgiven. For major omissions, you may need to offer a Damm (sacrifice of a sheep) or repeat the ritual. Consult a qualified scholar or your group's guide if you're unsure.

Can women perform Umrah during menstruation?

Women can enter Ihram and perform Sa'i during menstruation, but cannot perform Tawaf until they attain purity. If time is short before departure, some scholars allow Tawaf in cases of necessity, but this should be consulted with a scholar beforehand. See our How to Perform Umrah for Ladies guide.

Do I need to recite specific duas during Tawaf?

No specific supplication is required for each round. You may supplicate with whatever is easy from the Qur'an, Sunnah, and your own heartfelt prayers. The only consistent dua is "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah..." recited between the Black Stone and Yemeni Corner. See our Essential Dua During Umrah collection.

What is the difference between Umrah and Hajj?

Umrah is the "lesser pilgrimage" that can be performed at any time of year and takes a few hours. Hajj is the "greater pilgrimage" performed only during specific days of Dhul Hijjah, requires additional rituals (like standing at Arafah), and is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who are able.

What is the reward of performing Umrah in Ramadan?

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj." Many scholars interpret this as meaning the reward equals that of a small Hajj (Hajj Asghar) — not that it fulfils the obligation. That said, Ramadan Umrah packages cost 30–50% more due to high demand. See our Ramadan Umrah Packages.

Can I perform Umrah without a travel agent?

Yes, but it's difficult in 2026 due to the Nusuk BRN requirements. You need confirmed hotel bookings for every night and a pre-arranged package to get the visa. Most pilgrims find it easier to use a licensed travel agent. See Can I Perform Umrah Without a Travel Agent? and our Umrah Visa Without Package guide.
