25-May-2026
Sri Lanka has officially launched a free Sri Lanka tourist Visa, Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) program for citizens of 40 countries starting May 25, 2026. The move is expected to strengthen tourism growth, increase international arrivals, and position Sri Lanka as one of Asia’s most attractive travel destinations.
Under the new policy, eligible travelers will no longer need to pay tourist visa fees. However, visitors must still apply online for an ETA before entering Sri Lanka.
The initiative follows approval by Sri Lanka’s Cabinet and Parliament earlier this year and is now being fully implemented through the country’s immigration system.
The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is Sri Lanka’s online travel approval system that allows foreign tourists to enter the country for short stays. Anyone who intends to visit Sri Lanka on tourism purpose can apply for this visa.
The government clarified that the visa process itself has not been removed. Instead, the visa fee has been eliminated for selected nationalities.
Sri Lanka is aggressively working to revive and expand its tourism industry after years of economic and travel disruptions. Even from Pakistan, every year, thousands of travelers take flights from Lahore to Colombo to explore the beauty of Sri Lanka. Tourism remains one of the country’s largest foreign exchange earners.
The free ETA initiative is expected to:
| Expected Impact | Details |
|---|---|
| Increase Tourist Arrivals | Easier and cheaper travel process |
| Improve Tourism Revenue | More international visitors spending locally |
| Strengthen Airline Connectivity | Higher travel demand to Colombo |
| Enhance Global Competitiveness | Compete with other visa-friendly Asian destinations |
| Support Hotels & Businesses | Boost hospitality and tourism sectors |
Tourism experts believe visa-free or low-cost travel policies significantly influence travelers when choosing destinations in Asia.
Sri Lanka has expanded the list of countries eligible for visa fee-free travel under the ETA system.
The complete list includes 40 nationalities selected by the Sri Lankan government as part of its tourism expansion strategy.
Even though the ETA is now free for eligible travelers, the online application process remains compulsory.
